Geckos are small, inexpensive, easy to keep and are very tame (will be happy to hang about on your shoulder). They also do not require as large a tank as most other snakes and lizards.

Of course, if you aren't allergic like I am, I say get a mammal, but if you are into "herps" as I am, ten for a beginner I would recommend a leopard gecko. They don't require a lot of space and are fair;y easy to keep. They can also be handled if you start taming them when they're little. Leopard are usually hailed as the best beginner pets. All you really need is a 10-gallon terrarium, some heaters, hidebox, and food. Your local pet store sould have geckos--they're really popular. I have one and he is very cute and social. good luck!

WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT GET AN IGUANA! THey are not beginner pets and require a terrarium the size of a room and have lots of diseases in captivity, and they're hard to take care of. You'll be better off with a smaller lizard!

A good reptile pet is a Corn Snake. They are gentle and hardly ever bite. You can feed them a mouse once every week.

If you don't want a snake, or your mother/father won't let you have one, you might consider an iguana, which eats special iguana food you can buy at the pet store.

Be sure to read up on whatever pet you get, so you can take care of it properly. Ask the pet shop people for advice on caring for your pet.

be carefull think carefully! I know what kids are like I used to be one! one minute they want a pet the next their not interested and you get left with the job of cleaning up after it. Wait a couple of days and if the child still ask a for one then think what would best suit your needs.
Would the animal be left alone alot i.e. school work ect? if so dog no way! they need walks and company they are a social animal and need people around. Cats are okay with being left alone they love it and a kitten can bring joy to a child the same way a dog will plus cats dont need to walked and have much smaller droppings catch my drift. Fish arent much fun for a child as pretty as they are they cannot interact with them i.e. stroking and playing.
The next options would be other rodents I have had em all rats to hamsters. Rats form a good dealer do not bite and are intelligent as dog the only negative being they only live 3 years which is another thing you must bear in mind is the life span of the pet you are going to get you dont want to get mice that die after a yar and deal with tears every year do you.

You need to think
What have I got room for?
Will it need specialist equipment?
will it need walking?
how clean is it?
whats its life span?
big one! will it bite?
will it be suitable for a 12 year old?
will it destroy the house?
and will the child still eb interested after the novelties worn off?

I know I have rambled alot but my god did I make the mistakes to learn from please dont get a gerbil as they bite like mad and what ever you get bear in mind they will most likey want to handle it alot I would be tempted to get a rabbit personnaly but the choice is yours.

Reptiles are a lot of responsibility - and they cost a lot to get started - being the cage - heating rock - food - and stuff to put in the tank - temperature is very important for them and you have to really pay attention to them if they get sick you have to know what to look for since some don't make much noise. I would suggest a rabbit - or a genie pig or hamster, they make really good pets also.

Bearded Dragons are great beginner reptiles. Do your research first. The initial set up will be $200-$300 dollars for a 50 gallon tank, substrate, lighting etc.

Google "Bearded Dragon care sheet"

You might want to start off with a small animal. Something that doesn't take up space and is easy to take care of. If you like reptiles then you need to get a iguana, I've had one and they are so awesome. Its not hard to take care of and they live a long time.

Uh, it really depends on how responsible and caring you are. I think an iguana is a good idea, but only if you are going to take the time to take care of it, and hold it and stuff so it doesn't get vicious.
