I never gave it a thought. I remember my first encounter with a chain pen. It was a bank and I paid it no mind after I concluded that the bank was not so concerned with the possible theft but rather the time consumed in furnishing the next customer with a possible deposit. The doors are open to avoid the expense of paying for a door man. Both are questions regarding economics. All banks make money.

Leaving a banks door open does not encourage robbery lol. However, if banks didn't chain their pens to the counter little kids or old ppl might steal them. Actually, from my personal experience at work, I have found that leaving the door open draws business, probably because an open door is more inviting.

Because it's a heck of a lot easier to walk out with the pens and get away with it, than it is to steal the money.
And, there is nothing worse than being a teller and starting the day with two dozen pens and buy the end, have none. It gets expensive for the banks.

I have never seen a bank with a door open to be honest. the reason they keep pens chained so it will always be there for the customer. I know i would rather have a pen ready for me rather then bring in or trying to find one. convenience!

There's 1 out of 10 chance that the bank will be robbed but there's 10,000 chance out of 365 days that pens are stolen.
Besides, you don't use the pen to enter the bank and you don't use the door to write on the bank forms either. :-)

Economics, Time saved in furnishing the next customer with a writing instrument. He might want to make a deposit. By leaving the door open an employee of the bank dose not have to tend the door in order to serve that customer. I bet you already knew that.

So the customers don't realize that the pens are secretly little people. They work for the bank, slaving and pushing them selves. They are chained so they can not escape... but I believe this is wrong.
FREE THE PENS!

They leave the door open to welcome people and to keep fresh air flowing. The pens are chained to prevent them from walking out the open door.

I reckon they leave them open so if someone is strong enough to steal the pen whilst it is still attached to the desk, they won't have to waste time in their getaway trying to open the door aswell!!
