How about this idea. Lower income tax to a very low level or no tax on it at all. Then increase sales tax to a higher level that would support the loss in income tax ( i don't know what percentage that would be you would have to do some major research, maybe a 20% - 25% sales tax ). I think that this could work becuase Americans in general, as major consumers, buy and buy and buy everything we want and more even if we don't need it. Things like ebay shows that we love to buy and sell. Also, the income tax right now is only hurting the lower income and middle income families (not the rich people becuase what do they care about a portion of their money going away when they still have hundreds of thousands left). Using this higher sales tax, wouldn't it help everyone, especially the poor, since they have learned the valuable lesson to only buy what one needs?

So anyway, is this too crazy? I'm not afraid if it is, just tell me. And I know a "young, uneducated, ignorant" child like myself does know of the real world, but I am free to brainstorm, ain't I? And it would probably never happen even if it was brought up to congress or whatever because most congressmen and people in general are afraid of change (oh no). Feel free to respond in any way.

At least you have thought intelligently about how we middle class citizens can survive with all the burdens that hard work costs us personally! It's a pretty innovative concept, but you are over-looking the fact that this possible solution would effect the wealthier portion of our population and really what does wealth go hand in hand with.........?.....
POWER, my friend...the rich would never allow such a solution! Keep brainstorming.....perhaps a workable idea to save the debacle our government calls "retirement"...........We pay and pay and research shows that our medicare/retirement benefits (which enable us to dine on dog food) will virtually become non-existent before too long!!

I think your idea could perhaps really damage the American economy, raising sales tax would probably drastically reduce spending, people would save money more and there would be less consumer confidence.
I think the US should introduce a Japanese style payment system, the difference between the highest and lowest paid worker can be no more than around 20 times (I think its around that) So if someone is being paid $1000 an hour in the company, the lowest wage the lowest worker can recieve is $50 an hour. It would mean wealth is spread out more.

That would be a great idea as long as you don't tax essentials such as food and shelter and tax SUVs through the ying yang esp the big ones. Hate those gas guzzling monsters
