You shouldn't give any water until the baby is eating solid foods (and she/he should start between 6 and 12 months). They don't *need* any water (as long as they are breastfeeding frequently) until at least 18 months.

If you give an infant water, you put the baby at risk for malnutrition. The baby will get all the liquids it needs, in most cases, from the formula or breast milk. Giving water replaces the nutrition and calories the child NEEDS.

Also, you should not give the child solid foods until 6 months, or 4 months at the ABSOLUTE earliest. Giving solids too early can cause allergies to develop.

You can give a baby water at any age as long as it is boiled water.Don't just take my word for it though contact you midwife or dr for advise.
I had to give all of my children water in between feeds and
not just because they were born in the summer months. Make sure its boiled and cool enough for baby. But i'm sure you know that already.

There are so many different ways of doing things. The doc says one people say other things. Just do what you feel is best. Water won't harm the baby. It actually helps with the gas or it did for me anyway. I have 2 girls i gave them water after a couple weeks and i never had problems with them crying from gas. So in the end do what works for you.

a baby does not need water until 12 months and no longer breastfeeding (it may be different with formula) but it is safe to give him very small amounts starting at 6 months (no more than a tsp).

Well water is given to babies when their one in juice to dilute the potency. So water can be given at one years of age. Start off with giving them a little though.

My sis formula feeds her girl, and she mixes the formula up with water, so essentially she's been giving her water since birth. As for just water alone, I would say around 5-6 months.

Kaylamay is right as long as your baby is getting the amount of formula it should be eating, water between meals at such a small amount will not hurt. It will also help your baby in bowel movements and dehydration.
