I hear they are very unreliable. But don't take my word for it. Check out Consumer Reports. Your public library should have a copy.

One of the worst Mercedes ever built. Just buy the new one and you can be much happier with it. Or you can try some other alternatives like the Lexus LX470, BMW X5, Volkswagen Touareg, or other more SUV. If I were looking for an SUV, I'll be buying a new Discovery...

My family had also owned a 2001 Mercedes-Benz ML320 SUV. The SUV was initially very nice but soon had problems. We were lucky that we had a one year lease! I would recommend either a Volvo XC90 (which is one of the vehicles we have now) or a BMW X5.

According to BBC's TOP GEAR + leading motoring journalist Jeremy Clarkson..... it's crap (and he never minces his words if a car is bad)...... came bottom of the reliability survey.
Quoted from his review of the new model (Sunday Times, January 2006):
"The old model was terrible. Designed just before BMW upped the ante with the new Range Rover and the X5, and built in Alabama by people more used to picking cotton than making complicated machinery, it emerged into the world badly built, lumpen, impractical and already old fashioned. Small wonder that in Top Gear’s 2004 motoring satisfaction survey it came home in last place. The worst car money can buy. "

I don't see reviews for the 2001 M class.
Here's MSN's ratings on the M Class 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003
http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/reliability.aspx?year=2002&make=Mercedes-Benz&model=M-Class
It will give you a gauge of what you're looking at.

Have 1999ML320 car has a lot of cheap plastic however if you keep up on the service it is still running good.
Changed the Transmission fluid and filter torque converter even has a drain hole plug so able to get all fluid out. changed both front and rear diff fluids. normal brake pad changes changed power steering fluid two times to flush out old as well as the filter box on PS pump. installed after market Pioneer Navi radio. bypassed the daylight lamps by pulling relays and install LED lights. car burns light bulbs. Harmonic balance is the problem tsb part however it still works good. small rust bits around doors. change the rear locking latch cheap plastic gets brittle. changed the crap OEM speakers with aftermarket. changed fuel pump. I have a scan tool so can diagnose problems instead of stealer. changed crank position sensor caused intermittent start problems.
changed the clutch fan. other than that truck has over 200K miles so it is doing OK. re sale value sucks so just keep drive the thing until it rusts off the frame.
