Historically, the US government used to not aid poor Americans. But once the Great Depression occurred in the 1930's more people than ever need a job to provide for their families so president Franklin D Roosevelt initiated a number of different programs designed to get people back in the workforce. Over time these programs meant to provide temporary relief turned into what is known as WELFARE today and is often abused as a way of life rather than as a safety net. The government went on to provide more programs like Food Stamps, Housing programs, Medical care (medicare and medicaid), that further sustain those who assume welfare as their way of life. Amongst the working people of America, these people are a thorn in their *** because they are living off the sweat of their labor. The Republicans blame the Democrats because the originator of these program, Franklin D Roosevelt, was a Democrat. But those same Republicans conveniently forget that their political party has control over the three branches of the US government today (and at times since the origination of welfare), but nothing has changed.

When I left my husband I had to get on TANF. I was sick and pregnant (I had to be hooked up to a heart monitor 24/7) and they still insisted that I look for work. Because I was new in town the quickest thing I could get was a cashier position at $7.00 an hour, it made my condition worse. When I got off from work I could barely take care of my 2 children. Trust me it is no free lunch. Also, thankfully my situation with my husband wasn't physical because I had to go back. I see why woman that are abused stay in the relationship because the alternative is to starve, struggle, be homeless, and still be treated as a second class citizen. By the by, I am not uneducated and I left a good job when I left my husband because I left the area and I had exhausted all of my personal savings so not everyone on assistance are low lives, and you need to be careful becuase unless you are independently wealthy you could need it someday.

poor people in america actually receive very little benefits. when you total up the benefits they receive it does not touch the amount our government gives away to other countries. we give away billions of dollars yearly to other countries while the poor and working poor in america exist without health insurance and in some cases food. The republicans main platform is welfare( the supposed handouts the poor receive). Every major city in america turns away the homeless while we steadily provide money to other countries. yet the conservatives would have you believe that the poor are receiving so many benefits.

Just to make something clear welfare is not alot of money it caps out at 225.00 a month of money and then yeah some food stamps and help with childcare (to some). I was a full time college student with a kid, working fulltime, and yes welfare helped. The cost of childcare is about 600.00 a month if not more food for 2 is at least 300.00 a month. Now answer me if 225.00 and some food stamps make it seem like people collecting welfare are "livin large"?

Only the working poor or the disabled get public assistance from the government. Homelss people get nothing.
The amount spent by ur government for Public assistance is nothing compared to the "handouts" given to the wealthy...aka Coporate Welfare!
Corporate Welfare is bull$h*t!

It is called welfare. There is also all those good plans available. However, none of it equals a livable wage. Unlike these other programs that the taxpayer also pays for. Such as corporate bailout, bankruptcy. These leave people a "golden parachute" to live with, and start over. The only people "livin large" are those who abuse the system.
By the way. To all of you who responded with your own political views ****-off.

They get free food stamps, free healthinsurance called medicaid ,
a free house from habitat for humanity and sometimes SSI but the rest of us pay for it while we go without health insurance. Then, if we get really sick and lose every penny to the medical bills, we are considered poor and then we get medicaid. It makes no sense to me. I think we should all have free or inexpensive health insurance.
