OK, Here is your idiot need not reply. First I am a non smoker but did smoke for 3 years til I took a drink of water with a smoke and that was enough to make me quit. You are right on the drive throughs, they should ban those as the people working there are really sucking in the fumes. They did take lead out of gas and I think that is what is wrong with our generation. We spelled too much lead and it destoyed our brain cells. My brother was almost killed while working on his car in a garage with the door up a couple feet but my cousin was killed from the fumes. This is another reason why I say we need solar panels on car tops and I know people might not like it cause they would think of it maybe ruining the look of that expensive car that gives them that image they want. I call it car loan poor.I really think that we are taxed for gas , cigs, and everything including maxi-pads which are a nessesity for a woman. One of the worst fumes are the ones that come from these diesel trucks that people have. I say if you live in town you don't need one or any SUV for that matter . People need to know that sewer gas is another form of gas that can kill and cattle farms produce another form of gas set off. Now in a resturant people don't drive their car in and park it at the table while you eat where as cigs are smoked in them. It is not banned in our town yet but I can't figure out why they have a smoking and a non smoking section when it all goes through the same air ducts. As to your question I could say how would you like to sit and smell someones second hand farts while you were eating . See I watched my father die and my sister die a horrible death due to smoking so all I can say is you should quit smoking for your health and you will feel better and live longer and have more blow for your music when you play. People will never give up cars and the corporations are making too much money to get away from fossil fuels in the near future. So to the new smoking laws the only thing you can do is except it . You can put the tobacco in your pipe and smoke it but bend over and take it up the tail pipe cause now its the law and a new generation is here.

Smoking is evil, and a nasty habit, and the ones they're trying to really save aren't the second-hand smokers, but the first-hand smokers. Smoking kills, if you do it long enough, and the laws are going into effect to try and help more people change and create less indigent long-term hospital patients. Cars kill too, but
a quick death is a lot more merciful than a long, lingering existence on oxygen, pills, and and and. Just think of the magic of being intubated to pull 3 pounds of liquified dying lung out of your chest. Mmmmmmm.... Cigarette? Sure sounds like a different issue when you look at it that way...

Without even looking below the surface I will give you a couple reasons.
Cigarettes are something that society wants to discourage because it is detrimental to society.
Automobiles are something american society benefits greatly from and therefore wants to encourage.
The secondhand smoke isn't taxed the TOBACCO is.
fuel tax
emissions fees
registration fees
Plus all of the commerce facilitated by automobiles is taxed (redundantly).
I think it is a foolish law to dictate to business owners whether customers can smoke.
It should be up to the proprietor!
I agree with protecting PUBLIC buildings like municipal offices, postal facilities, etc.
(non-smoker)

Submitted respectfully, in no particular order: #1. There are compelling reasons for operating motor vehicles, far too many to list and most are patently obvious. #2. Although this wasn't part of your question or challenge, I will still say that until alternative cleaner fuels and power sources are developed, auto exhaust fumes will continue to be one of the largest sources of pollution. #3. Carbon monoxide is killing you too, just more slowly. #4. You will find it hard to justify smoking as a necessary action such as operation of motor vehicles. Now, so you know, I am a smoker (trying to quit!), I've smoked for thirty-some years, and I'm now suffering the effects of my lifelong addiction. You should also know that my primary focus of study and research is environmental geography, landscape biogeography, population ecology and more. In short, I am very much concerned with the environmental consequences of human activities, including pollution from motor vehicles.

none the less your point is valid when you consider that Bush refused to sign the Koyoto treaty yet the surgeon general still gives his 2 cents

Love that. I am a smoker too. I want them to tax the hell out of boose. How many peoples lives are ruined because of that? I'm sure a 6 pack of beer has killed more people that a pack of cigarettes. Also the smell sickens me.
Have you noticed when you are out in public, that people can stand near you for ten minutes and when they finally notice you have a cigarette, they start coughing?
