Napoleon wanted an older, rich woman for his wife, to give him authority; Barras, one of the Directors of France at the time, had Josephine as his mistress and wanted to get rid of her. They met, married and had a stormy relationship. Napoleon did fall in love with her, but she did not reciprocate. Later, she began to love him as he fell out of love with her. As usual, in the way of kings and rulers through history, Napoleon wanted a son: Josephine, being older, couldn't give him one. He divorced her, much to her distress, and married Marie-Louise of Austria, who did bear him a son, the little King of Rome. Josephine lived out her days at Malmaison, a beautiful house near Paris, where she eventually died. There is still a rose garden there where the descendants of the roses she planted survive.
Here are a couple of very readable sites (not too long!) about their relationship:

"Desiree" by Anne-Marie Selinko is a lovely book - although not completely historically accurate - which is the diary of Desiree Clary, a former girlfriend of Napoleon's who went on to marry one of his marshals, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, and become Queen of Sweden. According to this book, Napoleon remained in love with Desiree, and features largely in it. (Don't take it as gospel, though!)

Well, something that has been proved, is correct but none mentions is that Napoleon's father was Greek, from the town Itilo, Mani South Peloponnese! His name was KALOMEROS and when he moved to Italy, his name was "translated", thus becoming Bonaparte!
When his father moved to Corsica, there were many fights between local groups. The Maniates, although less and without proper weapons were managing to keep their properties and lives. Even Napoleon was frequently fighting! From the strategy and fighting systems of Maniates, Napoleon got many lessons which he was frequently using!

Napoleon Bonaparte made himself Emperor of France, and crowned Josephine as his Empress. Later, because she couldn't bear children, he divorced her and married Austrian Archduchess Marie Louise, who bore him a son known as the King of Rome. He conquered most of Europe, but his failed invasion of Russia marked the start of his decline, and ultimate fall at the Battle of Waterloo. He died in exile, as a British prisoner, on a remote island in the middle of the ocean.
