The costs for opening every containing coming/going from the United States would bury us in taxes. The taxes imposed on countries bringing stuff into the country, would have one of two results. First it might just cause those countries to raise their prices in the United States (this is the most likely). Now things we get from China, Hong Kong, Thailand, etc... are generally fairly quality items at low prices. They would cease. Second, the countries might cease to ship to the US and either stop importing from the US. Either way....it wouldn't be good.
As far as taxes go, our government misspends more money than any other country in the world. We need a smaller government. Look to your local Senator and see how much he spends on basic administrational costs...then look at his per diem and money he spends going to your capital. I know in Pennsylvania they get up to $350 a day for meals and hotel. Ultimately it would have been cheaper for the state to build a hotel with a cafeteria to host the Senators.

There is a bill in congress right now to abolish the IRS by the year 2009. They will be going to a "flat tax" rate for everyone....no more breaks for the rich, and screw the middle class taxpayer

The need for taxes is real. The way we do it is wrong.
The FairTax:
Abolishes the IRS
Closes all tax loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
Maintains our current Social Security and Medicare benefits
Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
Allows American products to compete fairly
Reimburses the tax on purchases of basic necessities
Enables retirees to keep their entire pension
Enables workers to keep their entire paycheck

your understanding of the tax system is basic and has left out several key needs that our taxes pay for. you forget national defense (military), research, medicare, transportation, food stamps, and all other infrastructure provided to us by taxes. these are vital to our society; we need taxes to provide these.
i agree that waste and bureaucracy are big problems with our current system, but no taxes would cause huge amounts of crime due to an enormous number of hungry and poor people. they should institute a flat tax and cut all pork barrel and deficit spending.
