I clearly have no idea what they are teaching you in schools these days. In my youth I may not have been the sharpest pencil in the case intellectually, but at least I always knew how to spell words correctly. Spelling is not akin to rocket science you know. Try picking up a dictionary and reading it once in a while. You might learn something. Or of course, you could always try using the spell-check facility on this website. Phew! I'm glad I've got that off my chest.

Bear in mind that a lot of the questions come from India, Africa, South Asia and all sorts of places where English is not a first language. I tend to excuse those somewhat, myself. The one's I dislike most are the ones which are written in txtng English ... 4 gds sak gv me a break - I h8 those!

Sadly good spelling and grammar are no longer considered essential for writing exams - whereas bad spelling and grammar used to be marked down in all exams (not just English) this is no longer the case.

I find the best policy is not to keep carping on about bad spelling (though I sometimes slip, lol) but to give answers in the clearest and most correct English possible in the hope that the difference will become obvious.

Unfortunately, I think the use of the spell checker on some of the stuff typed here might confuse the poor little mites still further!

Well Sam I guess we all make mistakes.

Also some of us are better at different things.

Although I do have some sympathy for your view, I guess it comes down to differing priorities. As you say it used to be drummed into you that spelling was important.

It is not the same now. Spell checkers don't always help as they can come up with some funny results. I used to do business with a company called Westlands and if spell checked a document with their name in it, the spell checker always tried to change it to Wetlands. Try it.

Some of it is the speed of typing I do it myself, and some times abbreviations are use, but generally the same value is not given to spelling these days. That could be a pity if in later life, today youngsters have difficulty try to break the habit of poor spelling.

Did I make any mistakes ? !!! LOL.

Most of the people just want to get their questions (or answers) out in the open fast, so they don't realize that their spelling is incorrect until they look at it amongst all the other answers or questions. Otherwise they are too lazy to look the words up and hope that the people reading it will at least get the gist of it. Schools are trying, but some words are harder to spell than others. Even as I was typing up your answer, I made several mistakes. I just fixed them so they wouldn't irritate you. :)

Bad spelling (as well as punctuation and grammar) make my blood boil. I consider it to be a mark of respect to address people properly with correctly formed and spelled sentences. People just don't think it is important these days. I sould like an old man, but I am 'only' 34!

I don't think it has anything to do with people not being able to spell. Maybe they are typing very fast and miss judged the keys or they could be using a lot of txt short cuts in order to save their fingers. Who knows ! x

Some people who post here are not native English speakers. English may be their 2nd or 3rd language.

How many British, Americans, Aussies or Kiwis do you know who can speak more than one language? or dare use their "broken" 2nd language for question-posting on a website?
