Not sure what the concept is. It has to do with the density of the glass and the tensile strength of skin. You can walk on a lot of broken glass with a high density, i.e., pieces are close together, since the pressure on any one piece is not suffucient to penetrate the skin. Walk on one or a few pieces and now the pressue on a single piece is much higher and penetration occurs. This is how a magician lies on a bed of nails.

ok, I'll take a stab in the dark....
How about.....the instructor does not have enough mass for gravity to overcome the cohesive forces holding the cells of his feet together.
The instructor could have large feet and not weigh much.....The tight junctions between the cells of his feet could be stronger than the force of gravity pulling his/her body down.
Just guessing....
