It was Louis XIV, le Roi Soleil (the Sun King), who said "L'etat c'est moi."

He was responsible for commissioning the palace at Versailles, built on the inspiration of Vaux le Vicomte, the palace of his finance minister Nicolas Fouquet (who he had thrown into prison for life for supposedly diverting state funds--but Fouquet was innocent).
