Hey, accordion man, I live in Western Oregon. The beach (Seaside) is two hours or less away and the mountains (Mount Hood-11000 feet elevation) is two hours away. Portland, beautiful shining Portland, you can catch salmon in the middle of the city, and it is the hub for micro brew taverns, and fountains that you can bathe in, and the most forested parkland within a city in the U.S., is just 30 minutes away. There are state parks (Silverton State Falls) that are within 35 minutes away that you can camp in. But overall, I prefer to vacation in Central Oregon. The elevation is 3000 feet and one is close to lakes and streams for fishing and sight seeing. Las Vegas isn't a bad choice either.

I live about an hour from the beach and about five hours from the mountains. Of course I want to go to the mountains, since I can go and come from the beach in a day easy.

I have the beach all the time because I live In Florida, and I'm really not what you'd call a "city girl".
So when I escape, I go to the mountains.
My retirement plan is to build a log-cabin up in the mountains, and to spend my days puttering in my garden, and holding hands with my husband as we face our rocking chairs towards the west when the sun sets each evening....
Yeah....Definitely the mountains.

Beach/Ocean. I am heading over to Oregon coast again in about 2 weeks. My favorite spot to drive and just see the magnificent oceanside.
I only live 1 hour from the Rockies, so I have to chance to go there whenever I wish. A Sunday drive sometimes is a nice diversion.
