Infact the easy way is to change the file extension to directly to the file extension you want. *.bmp to *.jpg or *.gif. But my changing the file extension. You will get a little effect in lossing color, resolution or file size.

You can do all this at Paint(default in Window), Adobe PhotoShop, Macromedia Firework or any Photo Editing Software you can name it.

You can use most any image editing program open the .bmp file and then save it as a .jpg file. The other way would be to use a utility like John's Image Convertor, http://www.johnsadventures.com/backend/ImageConverter/ or other freeware utility, just a suggestion.
