Australia is unique in many ways. Because of its isolation, plant and animal life has taken a different direction than on the other continents. Animals, such as the kangaroo, have evolved in Australia, but are found nowhere else. Ditto plants. It is also unique in that the centre is almost barren. Over 90 per cent of Australians live on the perimeter of their island continent,
and only a few live inland. This is quite different from the population distribution on any other continent.
