My wife is now only 6 1/2 weeks! She went to the Dr at 4 weeks for cramping and they told her that all was good and they were'nt going to do here pap and new ob appointment untill she was 10 weeks, but to come back for a follow up 2 weeks later. We went back they did another ultrasound and to our surprise... TWINS. Here's my question. They said there is no pressence of any seperation of the amniotic sac, does this mean identical twins. does a seperation sometimes show up later? No twins in the family just btw, i know monoamniotic twins is not hereditary but fraternal is. Just wondering how sure thaey can be at this stage that they are in one sac?

PS.... I AM SOOOO EXCITED!

If there is no separation of the amniotic sack, then it looks like you are getting identical twins. Congratulations. I have identical twin girls. It is hard work, so rally the support team now, but you are just going to love it. You will wake up one morning to hear them giggling at each other. My daughters were holding hands in their sleep at 2 days old.

By the way, I'm betting they said that they can't be 100% certain because sometimes things are not always what they seem. My 8 week scan showed one baby! We didn't bother with the 12/13 week one so didn't find out about the twins until nearly 19 weeks. You will probably have a few more scans during the pregnancy, so they will be able to confirm (although not 100% or course :) ) the amniotic sac business.

Congratulations

But getting a monozygotic twin can be both a boon and bane. There can be many complications. Please listen and follow your doctor's advice.

Here are a few tips:
1. At about 12-14 weeks, Ask you doctor whether there is any swelling at the fetal neck (N.T.)
2. At about 18-22 weeks, ask your doctor whether there are any observable abnormalities
3. Thereafter, you'd need (minimum) monthly scans till 28-30 weeks and fortnightly thereafter. After each scan, get your doctor to compare the growth pattern and update you. If one twin gets too large than the other, you may run into problems (20% difference in estimated weight)
4. From 34 weeks onwards, ask your doctor, at each visit, whether it is safe to carry on

From my personal point of view, monozygotic twin are better cared by fetal-medicine experts and delivered by 37 weeks pregnancy.

Sometimes it isn't discovered if it is identical or fraternal until they are born. It could be identical if they couldn't find a seperation, and identical twins do not run in families. So, maybe. Congradulations on your twins! Twins are great!

From my understanding (but ask your doctor) it looks like identical twins-Congrats! This means they will be the same sex of course and look just alike.
