The alternator generates electricity to supply power for all the systems in your car. It is heavy enough to recharge the amount of power it took to start the engine but not a fully or partly discharged battery. If your battery is in this state then a battery charger should be used. You should never have the engine running when you boost another car. The load is too much for the alternator and could damage it. Always shut the engine off. The battery in the boosting car will have enough power to start the other car.

the alternator keeps the battery fully charged when the care is running. It will power the lights, radio, heater , windows and any other electrical function in your car. When the alternator no longer works, then the battery will run the car until the battery goes dead too.
