You can pursue a degree at any age. But what will you do with it? Not to bring you down, but as competitive as academia is for tenure-track positions or even teaching positions, your age may work against you in pursuing those types of jobs even though it's illegal to dicriminate in that fashion. Also, think about tuition and whether you love math that much. Then if none of that turns you aside then certainly your age should not.

Never. You can always learn what you need, as long as you've got the time to devote to it. Go for it! We could use all the good physicists we can get!
