waves are produced at the surface level of the oceans due to movement of air. Air has some frictional effect on the surface of oceans only to certain depth beyond that there is no effect of waves on th ocean .

One of the purpose of waves is to remove debris from the oceans. It also plays a role in temperature distribution.
