First of all you can only hyphenate the word "compartment" if you reach the end of a line whilst writting it. In such cases, the ruleto break a word is that you do so in such a way that atleast two syllables* remain after the hyphen. In this case, that would mean com-partment.

* A syllable is the smallest sound unit of a word that it internationally accepted (meaning one cannot create their own syllables, but only use established formats) and this smallest unit must have a vowel sound.
