I did two and one half years of consulting.

The pluses: better pay than the salary employees.
flexible hours. You work on an hourly basis and normally your contractor will let you set your hours, within reason. If you do well, they may offer you full time employment.

The minuses: no health insurance provided, no vacations, higher taxes--you have to pay both ends of social security tax.
You are not treated as an employee. Not one of the group.

Consulting can be very rewarding. I know one guy that is an industrial consultant and makes nice 6 figure. This site has some information about consulting if I remember correctly. You may want to check it out.

They can be a double-edged sword. You receive more freedom and bosses tend to leave you alone more, but often you get worse bonuses and may not receive health care benefits. Hope this helps.
