My boyfriend has been dealing with depression for an extended period of time. When we talked about this two days ago, he admitted that he tried to commit suicide, and to me, that raised a red flag. He's very unhappy with his family, himself, his accomplishments, and his life. I would like to help him seek some help, because not only is his depression hurting himself, but its hurting his family and me. What can I do to help him deal with his depression?

Just... Try to encourage him in the right path. It's a time like this when he needs you the most. Keep telling him how great he is and how much you need him. He needs you now more than ever. Everyone says depression is a mental sickness and only a doctor can help, but I honestly don't even think that's true. If you're really having problems with family and life, then how is it just a mental condition? Just try to be there for him whenever he needs you, and don't be afraid to talk to him about why he's feeling like this. I guess I agree with other people when they say that he needs to see a doctor, but don't try to force him right away, that might only make him feel worse. I'm sorry, hope things go better for him in the future.

Seriously, he needs more help than you can provide him. Its not considered weak if some one needs medical help while coping with depression. There are many meds out there that your family physician can prescribe. There is no shame in talking to a professional counselor and if he is already talking about suicide then he needs help NOW. Depression is a disease, not just a state of mind.

Seek prof. help, he needs to be somewhere they can help him, that may mean a hospital, or a facility that deals with this. It is good that it sent you a red flag, this is dangerous. He needs to find out what needs to change in order for him to be ok espically because there is not an aspect of his life that he is satisfied by.

He revealed his feelings to you, so this is a good sign. You can be there for him by just listening. Dont shout at him for having these feelings. Make him feel appreciated. If this doesnt work, going to his General practitioner ( family doc) with him is a good idea. There are lots of options to help feeling less depressed - like counselling, or even anti depressants.
