Apparently. I'm pretty sure Al Gore had the popular vote in 2000 (no matter what the right has to say about it), but it was ultimately the Electoral College whose vote counted more. Couple that with the fact that the Supreme Court was the ultimate "decider" (before the word was coined by our president), it would appear that the popular vote holds no water.

It is NOT an illusion. It IS freedom...
Most American don't realize how free we really are and take simple things like voting for granted. My fiancee' lives in Vietnam, which is a communist state. They have mandatory elections, but you vote for only one party.
Simply being able to have a choice in voting is a luxury that she had only dreamed of. Being able to question our goverment in public without getting arrested, as many of you have here, is a freedom that she doesn't even know how to comprehend.
Think about that the next time you question your freedoms..

The voting system is without doubt a sham and a grand illusion, Freedom seems wealth allows that, and poverty restricts your "freedom" in many or most cases! However if i were wealthy i would not go into a fully occupied movie theater and shout "FIRE,FIRE,FIRE! or jump on board a plane and after take off loudly state "i have a bomb"!

an illusion no, deceptive yes. people like to think they only have to vote for the president to be involved in their government.
the electoral college is made up of people we elected. and most of the time its in their best interest to go with the poplular vote
cause if the american public would wise up they know they could pull those senators, congressman, state officals right out of office come next election, or even impeach if they wanted to

It's not the multiple choice deal that I worry about, it's that the electoral college has the right to override the popular vote that freaks me out.

yes our voting system is an illusion.we waste our time voting for our leaders where in the end the goverment decides.that is the only possible reason why bush is president.because if they really counted our votes he would not be president.

remember the electoral college. even if someone like kerry really does win the popular vote, someone like bush may get it, because the electoral college in no way represents the country's opinion. it's just a bunch of crap. popular vote should win, not electoral votes from idiots.

Complete illusion. Think about what it takes to get on a ballot and think about how informed most voters are.
