IMAC is a good choice for most people, however, you can run into speed issues with IMACs on the internet. Especially if you are trying to run certain video formats. The onlt other draw backs between IMAC and windows based units are that IMACs do not run many of the programs that run on Windows Based units and the upgrade costs are much higher than Windows Based units.
As far as Windows Based units, Dell is good. However, I have had two recent cases where the new PC turned out to be a lemon including one case where Dell placed a refurbished (previously returned) Motherboard in a new desktop and sold it as new. HP is a good brand. For what you are looking at using it for, you do not need the top of the line processor. You will however, want to get a as much memory (Also called RAM) as you can. Most Graphic cards will do for what you are looking to do but if you have a choice, go higher. I am not sure if you have a monitor. 19" is pretty much the standard now. That should be fine unless you are blind ;).
I hope this helps.

For under 2 grand (and more like less than 1500) you can get a nice media center PC from Dell and get surround sound and a nice video card to boot. Look at the Dell Dimension E510 Series.

MAC are excellant machine, but under 2 grand for a good Mac, not likely. You would want to go with a G4 or a G5 Mac at least...the iMac may not cut it.

Nowadays, $2000 is a ton to spend on a computer. As others have mentioned, a souped-up mid-range Dell computer should cost you quite a bit under $2000 and will definitely satisfy all your requirements.

Try a Vic 20! just kidding.....Why not choose a dell....easy to order, they will customize to what ever you want. The Imac looks cool but I have not tried one yet and I think they are expensive so you may need $3000-$4000 CDN.

Wal-mart sells a decent computer for $500. I own three, and they have run longer than my monsterbox.com $2500 computer. You can always soup them up with more memory or a better graphics card. Thats what I do.

Mac computers are great for multimedia. I don't know too much about Macs other than that. Hopefully someone else on here knows.
