Both......... and then it cycles. But those aren't the only reasons people smoke pot. Besides having some proven medicinal purposes, it does calm the nerves of certain people with anxiety disorders- way better than anti-depressants can. I trust marijuana and the "side effects" it can cause way more than how I've felt on Celexa and Lexaprol. Wanna talk about crazy??!!!

As a baby boomer and part of that generation , I can say that we smoked it because it was illegal and showed disrespect for the laws and the country. Yeah it felt good and we got buzzed. Frat houses had refrigerated kegs coolers and if you weren't smoking , you were drinking. Life was one party after another.

I don't smoke it anymore. I grew up. I have some friends that still do, but not many. There comes a time in your life that you realize it's not worth it. You find that the lack of motivation becomes the motivation to change. Afterward, you start making something out of yourself. No need to find those dead-end jobs just so there's no drug testing. You suddenly have a decent job and decent pay and you wonder why it took so long to get here.

I know that some people smoke pot because it motivates them to do things. I I don't know if pot causes people to become unmotivated but some people will say that it does.

Proper use of Pot in terms of Time ,Place and People can be a rewarding experience. You speak of motivation...motivation to WHAT?...Most people give" lip service" to popular media ideas about pot, when they know nothing at all about it.
Smoking pot under ideal conditions can allow one to reflect on ones life with great clarity. If smoking a joint causes someone to realise that they are in a dead end job with no spiritual promise, and causes them to lose their motivation to get ahead in that job, is that bad?
If someone smokes pot and examines their consience in a state of 'real moral clarity' (which pot can provide) and decides to end certain types of destructive behavior...is that bad?
If an individual smokes a joint and and realises that they are really quite a phoney, and it motivates them to change their behavior and to become more real...is that not a good thing.
The media is always just trying to sell papers along popular idea lines...
With proper consideration, using pot ocassionally to review ones thoughts and ideas in a new light can be an absolutely positive experience for almost anyone. You should realize that perhaps if it were not for the incredible amount of reflection that took place in the minds of the pot smokers of the 60's, The U.S and the world itself would probably be in a much much worse condition than it is now. We might even be in the aftermath of a Nuclear War. ..YOU...my friend should learn to THINK before you ask such thoughtless questions. Look at the roster of Scientists, Authors and great minds of our time that support NORML....Do you even know what that is? Get a life my friend...get a real LIFE....

I love Odyseu answer but from my experience all the great revelations I have had under the influence add up to nothing but pipe dreams. Things I had motivation for before exposure to pot (music and sex) only had slight changes. But new activities just fail to excite me anymore. Procrastination is the norm for me. Much has been sacrificed as a result of my decision to be a pot smoker. But I'm still rockin them shows man.

Unfortunately we could speculate all day, but one can never really know a motive for an action unless they ask someone specifically their reasoning and, in turn, that person is truthful.
