Normally it just shows the little icon for microsoft internet explorer. And why on occassion do those same specialized icons disappear and reappear. Just curious.

that is called a 'favicon' and is because some sites include this file when they setup their website. It is an icon file that exists on their webserver and can be used to show their logo or anything they want. Your browser automatically looks for this file when you access the site. If a site doesn't have this file it will show the IE icon instead.

Some sites have their own little icon sign thing, so when people put them on their favorites, they sign/icon shows up.

that's called a favorites icon. some sites make them so that their bookmark/favorite stands out a bit from others when listed in a long list. it is hidden in their html code, i don't think you can do anything about it. but enjoy the difference.

if you have a web site of your own you can upload your favicon to your main directory.

some people will tell you that you have to add the tag to all your pages to get the favicon to work.

this is not true! just upload it and your browser will do the rest.

not all homepage hosts allow you to use favicons. read their help pages to find out.

my favicon is a 16pixel by 16 pixel of my photo
