I wouldn't really call Scarface a remake due to the fact that only the premise of the original movie was used. The Brain DePalma film is great and there is a thin line between an original movie and a remake (which if you take the side of it being a remake, then that's all the proof you need.)
The best remake staying true to the original storyline; but with some changes would be Red Dragon which is a remake of Manhunter by Michael Mann. Although Red Dragon isn't as good as silience, but better than Hannibal - Manhunter s***ed!!!

Manhunter (starring William Peterson as FBI Special Agent & Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter) remade as Red Dragon (starring Edward Norton as FBI Special Agent Will Graham & Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter). Maybe not the greatest but pretty good.

In my opinion there is no shuch thing but, that is just my opinion. However, Psycho 1998 was a carbon copy of the 1960 original. (modernized: year and price of the cars, amount of money, etc. of course)

i think the best re-make I have seen personally is
THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR
pierce brosnan is the only man who could step into shoes the likes of Steve McQueen and Renee Russo is the only woman who could handle a role that Faye Dunaway made damn near perfect.

Well, since LOTR was a cheesy cartoon in the 70s, I'll say that.
