A duck has laid eggs in our swimming pool (yes, inside the pool) and they have soft shells. I don't know whether this is because of the exposure to chlorine and salt (we use salt-water chlorination) or any condition with the duck hen itself. Just curious what is causing that.

the duck itself is loco...usually they lay eggs in a nest on ground. If it were a domestic duck, it would be a lack of calcium in the diet

I have ducks and the younger ducks will lay in the water. Actually they will lay any were, until they understand to lay in a nest. About the shell, try to give them food with more protein. We had a duck that had soft shells and she got more higher protein food and she got better. We think also because she was so young.

It could be from the chemicals in the water. I know if you leave an egg in vinegar it will remover the shell.

The duck may also not be getting enough nutrients in its diet. The egg shells are composed of calcium, so it may not be getting enough calcium or protien.
