Why do men have nipples?

Because we are mammals and blessed with body hair, three middle ear bones, and the ability to nourish our young with milk that females produce in modified sweat glands called mammary glands.

Although females have the mammary glands, we all start out in a similar way in the embryo. During development, the embryo follows a female template until about six weeks, when the male sex chromosome kicks in for a male embryo. The embryo then begins to develop all of its male characteristics. Men are thus left with nipples and also with some breast tissue.

Men can even get breast cancer and there are some medical conditions that can cause male breasts to enlarge. Abnormal enlargement of the breasts in a male is known a gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can be caused by using anabolic steroids. So, if your favourite athlete suddenly develops man boobs and starts winning gold medals, you know the reason why.

As I understand it, way back near the beginning of "life on this earth," plants and animals had the two "sexes" in the same body. This, of course, was an extremely long time ago. As animals changed through evaluational change, separated "male and female" forms developed. The fact that men have nipples is a "throw back" to that evolutionary time. As I understand it, today there are parts of the female body that exist because of this time long ago when "male and female" were in "the same body." I am no expert, but seem to remember it being explained once in a college course.

Males have nipples because they are a feature which develops in the embryo before sexual differentiation occurs - Only in the female do they become functional. It's also another piece of evidence that we're related to other apes by common descent, rather than being intelligently designed, since the males of those species also have non-functional nipples just like us.

That's a good question. I think that they just never evolved out of them. It's rare, but men actually CAN produce breastmilk, sometimes simply through suggestion! so maybe those nipples are getting some use after all!

Uncle Cecil says that during the very early stages of fetal life, before the sex hormones have had a chance to do their stuff, all humans are basically bisexual. Among other things, you have two sets of primitive plumbing--one male, one female. Only one set develops into a mature urogenital system, but you retain traces of the other for the rest of your life.

i think that it is because all boys have some of the female hormone, estrogen in them so they have nipples. another possibility is that nipples r an all human thing not just something 2 feed babies out of, or that fathers areSUPPOSED2 TAKE ON SOME RESPONSIBLITIES!!!
