Because in the human race the man is the stronger one and the woman is meant to look pretty to attract the man. Due to this biological fact looking after one's apperance is considered a feminine thing, therefore a man who does it is also considered feminine.

I don't label anyone as such. And there is certainly a rise in the "metrosexual" look. A guy can certainly be well groomed and not be gay. I have a roommate who has more clothes than I do (by far, he works at Gap) and spends a fair amount of time with personal grooming, but he's about as straight (and accepting) as they come.
I would say that the general labelling as such that occurs would be because of the stereotypes that society still holds that straight men can get ready in the morning in 5-10 minutes because they aren't overly concerned with their appearance, and women and gay men need 30+ minutes because they spend more time on little details since they are concerned about how they look.

Things are always changing and at one time it seemed that most straight men do not take care of themselves or hug other men but things are changing. No labels needed
Most gay men have always taken care of themselves but there are always exceptions. I know a few pigs.

It could also be down to a change in the meaning of the word gay.
I notice now that objects can be gay, peoples' (non-sexual) thoughts can be gay. It's an adjective such that "You're so gay!" doesn't mean the speaker is discussing your sexual orientation (which would be a verb) but rather they're comparing you to the gay stereotype - of an impeccably groomed male (who just happens to hold no interest in women).

I've not labeled them gay, but I have referred to them metrosexual. It's not natural for a man to spend a whole lot of time on his appearance and in using all the things a woman does to primp. That's just the way it is.

always is such a strong word. it seems that you're doing the same thing that you're offended by - generalizing. straight men who look after their appearance are not always labelled as gay.

Not always.I think there's a little bit of hostility from straight men who really are slobs. There's a little bit of everything.Actually I'm glad more men are trying.Even some gay men have "slummed it" to pass for straight. But most people think about looks too much .

It's usually because it's not simply based on the appearance. It's usually a combination of things about the man. And you're right, it doesn't mean he's gay.
....Perhaps he's Bi.

I don't know but I've got the same trouble when I'm being acerbic. The gay community does not hold the patent on being catty, clean or having extremely good taste.
