My advice to you is DON'T GET THE SHOT!! I was on the shot for 3 years after my son was born. The only reason I chose that method is because I am terrible at remembering to take pills. I got pregnant again in 2004 and started the shot again after my 2nd baby was born. Again for the same reason. I am now off of the shot. My husband and I have chosen a different method of birth control. I had several reasons for not continuing with the shots. One is because of the weight gain. I was actually underweight before I got pregnant and I gained several pounds. But as much as I tried while I was on the provera shot I could not lose any of it. I lost the pregnancy fat but I actually gained again while on Provera. Once I stopped getting the shots my weight slowly began to go down. I never did anything different. No different eating habits, no change in my exercise routine...just the same as I have always done.
My second reason for stopping was because of the mood swings. Being on the shot was like having PMS 24/7. The least little thing irritated me. And my husband was always the one I "blamed." The mood swings caused so much tension between my husband and I. I'm lucky he actually stuck with me! To be perfectly honest....I was a *****. After I stopped the mood swings stopped as well. I don't get irritated as easily and our relationship is a lot better.
My 3rd reason is probably the most personal. While on the shot I had no sex drive. I never wanted to have sex with my husband. And nothing he did turned me on. I didn't even want him to touch me. It wasn't him, it was just because I was never in the mood. We did occasionally have sex. But not as often as most young married couples usually do. Now, you guessed it....I am now in the mood more often!! ;-)
I also need to add that it messed up my period. I would either not have one, or have a period for 10 days or more. My norm was usually 7 with it decreasing in heaviness on the 4th or 5th day. Now I am still waiting for my period. I'm not pregnant but it has been several months since my last shot and so far no period.
The Depo Provera shot has been linked to depletion of calcium in your bones. I think I may have proved this to be true in April 2005. I Twisted my ankle coming down 2 small steps outside of a store. But I did more than twist it. My ankle was fractured. The way I twisted my ankle I should have just had a bad sprain, not a fracture.
I have never tried the patch or know anyone who has. But I have not yet heard anything bad about it. I'm not saying that there isn't anything bad. For all we know women could be experiencing a lot of the same symptoms as with depo provera. So you might want to do some research.

Actually, the Depo shot is different for everyone, I mean you may take it and not have a period , or like me have your period for 2 whole weeks before its time for you to go get your next shot. But, you will gain weight thats definate. The patch it is actually killing people and making them very ill. So that one I do not suggest. If you dont want to take the pill, my suggestions would be the IUD or the Diaghram, those have very low side effects and will not cause problems with your weight. Oh, and as far as the black market is concerned, probably.

I am unsure if it is on the black market.
I did have the depo shot and i gained 40 pounds
During the time I used the patch (which was about a year and a half) I didn't gain any excessive weight. I stayed at 135 pounds, which is average for me.
With the patch you do have to make sure it is in place often but it did stay on almost 99.0% of the time.
You change patches once a week for three weeks and on the fourth week you don't wear one so your cycle can start

I was on the shot and i bled like a stuck pig for 8 months and I only took the first shot and on top of that it took me 3 years to get pregnant. The patch works well but you can't weigh over so much so check with your doctor on that one. I take the pill and love it, but I have to remember to take it every morning,I did gain weight with the pill but only like 5 lbs. Good luck!!

I have never taken the shot before but I heard it can be very bad for your body to not have a period for an extended period of time like that. I was on the patch on and off for like 3 years and it's my favorite form of BC. I never gained any weight because of it but when I was on the pill I gained a good 10 pounds. You just change it once a week and than don't wear it one week.. how easy is that?

I got the depo shot once, and I spotted for a couple of weeks around the time my normal period was due. I doctor said it was normal because it was my first time taking the shot (even though I had been on the pill for a while), and my hormones weren't sorted out yet. After I came off the shot I bled so heavy it scared me, but the doctor said that was normal too, because my hormones were stabalizing, and just put me back on the pill. I will never take the depo shot again!!

beware of the patch. it has caused blood clots in many women and even death. it might even be taken off the market. as for the shot, my sister in law was on it for years and never had any problems. she gain about 15 pounds while on it. she recently had to stop the shot b/c her doc said she was on it for too long. i think you best bet would be the pill, like all other forms of chemical birth control you may or may not gain weight. good luck making a decision.

my sister got on the dept shot after my niece was born...she was on it about 2 years before she and my bro-in-law decided to try to have another child. this was 5 years ago, shes yet to be able to get pregnant again, and has even gone through thousands of dollars in fertilization treatments and even tried enveitro. nothing has worked and she is worried that it has messed her up for good. this may not happen to every girl who gets on it, but it is certainly possible. she also gained a good 35 pounds during the time she was on depo. i am on the pill, yaz. its a "baby" version of yazmin. it's very low hormone and i have actually LOST weight on it. I would suggest you talk to your gyno and you two could defiantly come up with the right method for you. good luck.

Its called the Depo Provera shot. I used it a couple of times, and I don't recommend it at all. It stopped my ovulation all together. I had to take fertility drugs to get pregnant. Look into the pill...no all of them cause eight gain...its not a significant amount of weight anyways.
