Look find out some of his interests. Say sports. Then one day if you notice he is talking about sports, sorta squeeze in a small comment, and very easily work your way into the conversation. Really guys do the same with girls,ladies or whatever. Find something or commonality to talk about, then from there everything should fall into place.

The best way to start a conversation is with a question ? but not a close question (a yes or no question like ... like do you like sports?) but an open question (like what is it you like most about your favorite sport). With open questions people talk and express themselves then they may also ask you questions and thats how the conversation keeps on.
