American Football was invented in erm ... America (although invented is a bit tenuous as its just a derivative of Rugby) and Football was invented in one of the southern posh schools in England, it was originally nothing like it is now, something to do with a wall and a tree but that's supposed to be its roots
As for how many panels, depends totally on the ball, some of the new adidas and nike ones only have about 2 panels to make them rounder!

Don't believe the answer above - it wasn't invented in 'one of those posh schools in southern england'.
The earliest form of football is actually thought to be Chinese. The English set up the first football association, but even eskimos were playing it before the English.
For this world cup, the ball only has two panels, it's an ultra modern lightweight ball which will apparantly be tough for goalkeepers!

The first mention of anything like football comes from China in the 2nd & 3rd Century BC. A military training exercise involved kicking a ball through a target while being attacked by oppponents.A similar game also existed in Japan. The first game of this type was played in Ancient Greece and Rome. An official soccer ball has 32 panels held together by 642 stitches.

Believe it or not, it was invented in GREECE. There the Greeks made a crude version of football about 3,000 years ago. It basically was a few players on a field and the object of the game was to get the ball or something totally different and get it passed a certain point. Plus, a football consist of FOUR pigskin panels. Plus, they are NOT made of actual pig skin. Hope you like it.

There are theories that it was started when soldiers (I think they were Vikings) used to kick the heads of their enemies around. That 'game' had some sort of goalposts, so it seems to be the most obvious descendant.
The hexagon patterned one has 32 panels, the most poular one in England has 26. This years world cup football has 14.
