A quick test is put the positive on the tip of your tongue. You will feel a VERY light tingle. If you do, the battery is still good. I wouldn't suggest a car battery or nothing, but a regular AA battery will be fine. It won't hurt you. It might even tickle.

NO NO NO! MY ANSWER IS THE RIGHT ONE! PICK ME PICK ME PICK ME!!!

What you want to do is, bite the end. You don't have to bite through, just kind of crimp the end. If it tastes like cat butt, then it might not be any good. If you get the distinct impression that this tastes just exactly almost like what you would imagine biting into a pile of ole tin-type photos would taste like, spit it out FAST. But it is ok. The Battery is good.
If the battery crumbles when you bite it, it is stale. put a slice of bread in with it for a while and it should be ok. Then bite it again to check.
A dab of mayo on the stain, rubbed briskly under tepid water should do the trick.

The absolutely best way is to measure the voltage between the electrodes with a multimeter or a voltmeter. Some hardware stores call them "multitesters".

if battery is charged that means it can pass current. An easy way to check it is that (if battery is of less voltage) just touch its boyh terminals on your tounge and if you feel tangy taste, that means it is charger otherwise not.
