Because too many of them have taken advantage of the system. I've been to New Orleans there are so many jobs now it is crazy. Construction and restaurant jobs are bountiful. My question to you is, what percentage of those "victims" ever took care of themselves before? How many relied on the government before the storm. Why is it that other areas devastated by the storm have begun their recovery.
Why should the federal government have to endow these people with never ending aid? I have many friends who have lost everything from Katrina. They took the feds help to get restarted and now are rebuilding their lives.
At some point in time you must take care of yourself.

I know I'm going to be alone on this one, but before I start, let me just say that I had two relatives put out by Katrina, and several friends, so please don't think of me as totally ignorant to the suffering.
Now what exactly do you want the government to do? They've put up shelter and supplimental incomes for families effected by the storm. They have and still are repairing New Orleans, which shouldn't even be repaired... it should be moved. That is the most ignorant spot in the country to put a city. I mean seriously... it's below sea level and surrounded by water. This should be a sign from whatever devine being you believe in to stay out of there!!! Anyway, the point is that the government is doing a lot to help, by giving people money, shelter and other handouts. The problem is that there are people like my neighbors (who were displaced by the storm), that are just milking it for everything its worth. They haven't even looked for a job, because they don't need to. I'm not saying that everyone is like that, but a few bad apples spoil the bunch.

Can you point to me the article of the Constitution where it says this is the government's responsibility?
It would be very kind (if not outright miraculous) if you could find it for me.
Hold it! I'm channelling James Madison, author of the Constitution... woooooooooooo..... ooooooooo....
"The government of the United States is a definite government, confined to specified objects. It is not like state governments, whose powers are more general. Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government."
wwoooooo... oooooooooo.... ooooooooo
Golly, I guess charity (welfare and other socialist tripe) is not constitutional.
Perhaps you should take your own money and give it to charity.

Because there is a mind-game played by Conservative bureaucrats. It's called, "If I keep doing it wrong, maybe they'll make me stop doing it".
