Hi, I wish someone could help me out please. I have a compaq evo 1000C notebook. Everytime I connect any device (camera,mp3 player, external hard drive) to one of its USB ports, the computer reboots itself and doesnt boot properly until I remove the device from the USB port completely. I've tried downloading a few patches but nothing seems to work. please help.

Trying going into the Control Panel, clicking on the System icon, and going under the Hardware tab. Click on the Device Manager. Look for the USB Devices section in the list of hardware.

Expand the listing by clicking on the + in front of USB Devices. Right click on each USB device on the list (as we don't know which one is causing the problem) and uninstall them all.

Reboot the Laptop and it should reinstall all the USB devices. Have you have not deleted the drivers, it should have no problems finding and reinstalling them all.

After that, if the USB port still keeps crashing the laptop, you are looking at a hardware issue and will need to have it serviced by a professional.

User above me covered the majority of your problem, this addition is to cover this portion "doesnt boot properly until I remove the device from the USB port completely."

Newer laptops (2002 and beyond) have a default setting to boot from USB devices when they are plugged in. This can be changed in BIOS if it becomes an issue later. Just an FYI so you don't take it into a technician to get that problem "fixed".

Win98 does not natively help USB. you are able to upload USB drivers for most contraptions, yet i have in no way been waiting to get a USB mouse to artwork, highly not on a converter. you need to apply a ps2 mouse - thankfully they are nonetheless quite inexpensive (£10 at Maplins).
