Is it really worth the extra cost of getting a 1gb or is 512MB ok also?
I'm mostly going to be doing school work, maybe play some games but just like online games not like the games you buy, and surfing the web chatting a lot. Also some coding.

512 Is decent for what you plan to do. But if you should find that after a while it isn't enough, you can always upgrade your memory later.

Yes. Your applications will open faster, and you will find your multi-tasking is much smoother and you have less trouble switching back and fourth between applications. My laptop came with 512MB and I ripped it out and sold it on ebay and dropped in a 1GB. I loved it so much, I added a second 1GB a few months later. 2GB ram I can rip and burn dvds, play checkers, do email and pay the bills and nothing is ever slow, shaky or unstable.

It does of course depend on what your using it for. If your surfing the internet or whatever, then no, I guess you would not need it. But if your neck deep in dead bodies and your fighting your way out of jungle and your system is staggering or freezing, it could help.

512 is probably OK unless you have a habit of opening a whole lot of windows at the same time. On the other hand, 1GB will allow you to ensure an upgrade path if you want to use the new version of windows when it becomes generally available.

Yes you will need all of the ram you can get with your playing games on it.

Games need a lot of Ram. The more the better.

The next computer I get will be 2 megs of ram and 500GB Hard Drive with the new Vista coming out next year you will need 2 megs of ram to run Vista and run a good many games on it.

I hope this helps

I suppose you are referring to the RAM size in your laptop.

If your school work consists mostly of pictures, maps and other jpeg or bitmaps then its better to have 1GB of RAM else 512MB is good enough for the activities you've mentioned - in that case, no need to waste your money in getting 1GB !!

laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest laptops on the market, the only way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are also online.

these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do.

one such website is :

the difference in cost isn't much at all, especially if you have 512 and you upgrade it to 1 gig. www.crucial.com is a great site to shop for ram. Currently I'm running 2 gb of ram in my laptop but I game hardcore with it and its more of a desktop replacement that a laptop.

well assuming that your referring to ram if your just typing papers and chating it shouldn't be a very big deal but, you can tell a difference in speed but if you don't do a lot with big files it should be alright to have 512MB
