Check out their gift list, a lot of little items are great. Diapers are always a plus, just don't get the cheap ones. Think about your friend and you should be able to come up with something. A lot of things people don't buy and this turns out to be the best ever is a baby carrier that is for the front of you. Baby lays against your chest. It was the best thing I ever got for myself...

Get items for the baby when they are a little older. I got so many baby clothes she didn't even have a chance to wear them all before outgrowing them!! Larger sizes like 2T - 5T are a great idea. Or toys/books for a little older is also a good idea. Most of the time people get enough stuff for the first year, but then are on there own from there! I would have loved getting stuff for when my baby is a little older.

I always like the idea of baskets. Get a pretty basket and fill it with all kinds of baby stuff and stuff for the mother. Its personal, you made it yourself, and its pretty. The only thing is it could get pretty pricey, so if its someone close that's a good idea, and if its an acquaintance, then a gift card to babys r us might be the best move.

I like giving childrens' books. This is a gift that will be useful to the new parents long after the child has grown out of the cute little outfits most people give. Some of my favorites are "Tuesday", "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type", and anything by Dr. Suess.

I got a diaper wreath at my baby shower (its made out of a wire wreath frame wrapped with useable baby diapers and decorated with small items such as bibs, booties, binky's) or you can make a diaper cake. Just Yahoo! search or google Diaper Wreath or Diaper Cake. Sure to make for a memorable gift that will get TONS of attention!

Fels Naptha laundry bar soap, works wonders on those orange poo stains and most likely will be an original gift. Plus it's around a dollar a bar. You could add a few packs of diapers and onesies, too.

The best gift I got was a medium laundry basket full of detergent, hangers, disposable bibs. Anything and everything I needed for the day to day stuff. I never even thought about any of that stuff, but I was so glad to have it when the time came!

Find out if the parents have registered anywhere, then you can get them something they want and need!

Otherwise, go with some of the essentials: onesies, booties, bottles, bottle cleaners, diapers, creams, pacifier, toys, hot/cold ducky for the tub, towels.... go to the baby section of Target, you'll be knocked cold with ideas!

Best gift I received was pre-paid home diaper service.

Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!

They picked up the dirty ones, brought nice, new clean ones and left them right on the porch. Plus I could rest easy knowing my kids poop-filled diapers wouldn't still be in a landfill 200 years from now!

A wipe-warmer, it's original, and nobody ever picks it as a present, but the baby sure will appreciate it!
It keeps the wipes warm so they're not all cold on the baby's warm bottom.
