Consider that you are hiring someone who has skills that you do not. Consider that the handyman likely has a truck or van that has to be fueled, insured, kept in good repair, and replaced periodically. Consider that he probably has a large investment in tools that have to be maintained and replaced from time to time. Consider that he has to pay federal, state, and local taxes on his earnings and may have a general business license and/or occupational type license in every jurisdiction in which he works. Consider that he may have to pay for ads in the phone book or newspaper in order to get business. You get the picture. You are hiring a business, not just a guy with a few tools.
Consider all of that and $50.00 per hour is cheap.
Good luck with your project.

One must take into consideration that he is probably doing house calls which involves vehicle expenses and travel time. If you want your car fixed they won't do it at your home but they still feel free to charge you $80/hr. $50/hr sounds not too outrageous. If you live in the U.S.A. rates will vary little from city to city.

If he is licensed and insured or bonded then it is reasonable. If he is not insured then it is a little high.
