It depends on who put you on maternity leave. In Kansas, you're legally allowed to stay at work up until the day you give birth. Which means that an employer has no right to MAKE you go on maternity leave.

Just check your rights. They might have to let you go back until you HAVE to go on leave.

First and foremost: check with your local unemployment agency. A lot of times they will pay you a reduced check if you cannot work but get a check---it might depend on the state you live in, but go check with them first.

Then check with your local Social Service office. Depending on your current income you might qualify for foodstamps, assistance with electricity, medical assistance for yourself as well as for the baby and WICS(a program called women, infants and children) The WIC program alone could help you a lot because it gives you free milk, cheese, etc.etc. to nourish your baby. Depending on your household size and household income could you be eligible for a a lot more than you think, so give it a try. Good uck

Call your local job and family services office. They should be able to help you out with whatever you need (foodstamps, cash, and medical coverage). I had to do the same with my last one. You shouldn't feel embarrassed to go there, you need to do it for you, and your baby. Good Luck!
