Yes, it does hurt but it is SOOOO worth it. I have had both natural and epidural child birth and wish I had done ALL of the by epidural. I didn't even feel the needle go in as a matter of fact, I couldn't even feel my baby come out hardly at all. But if you go natural, it is an experience you will never forget. Your contractions are what really suck. Feels like a menstral cramp times 100! Painful and pleasant all at the same time. Good luck with which ever you choose!

You will be in so much pain from the contractions that you will not care and will not even notice the needle in your back. I have had 2 kids and if I had 10 more than I would have 10 more epidurals.

I had my first child at 20 and yes, labor and having it naturally hurts. But, the pain is gone within a week or so where as when you have a C-section, you will be in pain for a much longer amount of time.
But think of it like this, natural child birth and the amount of time you are in labor versus having the C-section and the amount of time you are in pain after the birth. I was in labor approx. 2 hours and I dont think I will ever be that lucky again.

The epidural really does NOT hurt. You will get a small needle first to numb the area, it feels a little like a bee sting, but only for a couple of seconds. When they put the bigger needle in, you can only feel slight pressure. It doesn't hurt at all... NOTHING like the pain of labor!!! I had my first 3 children without the epidural, for the same reason you are scared to get one. I had my last one with the epidural, and I could kick my own a$$ for not doing it with the first 3!! There is nothing to compare the pain of labor to. All I can say is, I thought I was going to DIE from the pain. I 'm not saying it's not worth it, but why suffer if you don't have to!? I definitely recommend the epidural!! You might have a sore lower back for a couple of days after, but that is all! Congrats on your baby, and lots of luck!!

Well I know you are scared of that needle. I was too. However first of all they do not let you see it. They know people in general are scared of needles and therefore prevent you from seeing it. But also you do not really feel the needle. And in comparison to the labor pains trust me it is NOTHING!!!
There is really no way to describe how bad natural labor feels. I have never had a child naturally...but have been in labor for over 20 hours naturally (long story) and trust me its not fun!
Imagine your period cramps multiplied by 1000 and constant for hours! That doesnt even include the pain of the baby coming out just the pain of the contractions!

go for the needle. On the Bequalming pain scale, all pain is listed logarithmically, so a pain of 6 hurts 10 times as much as a pain of 5.
Bigass needle in spine has pain of 3.4. Natural childbirth has pain factor of 5.0, over 10 times as bad.

I have had two children. With my first son, everything was natural. No drugs at all. And because the pain was so intense, my body wanted to push before it was ready and my 7 lb 8 oz son tried to kill me. =) I tore really bad because of pushing too early.
My second pregnancy I had an epidural. It was the best thing I've ever done. My son was 10 lbs 3 oz and I didn't tear at all. I felt no pain at all and no pressure until it was time to push. It took 3 pushes and he was born... the easiest delivery ever despite how big he was.
In summary, get the epidural! You'll thank me later. TRUST ME!

I just had my lil' girl 10 months ago. I did have the epidural and i was the same way you r before. Honestly no one can even try to explain the feeling it is but its not as bad as some make it out to be. They do numb your back b4 they do it and all you really feel is a small prick. It stings a little bit when the medicine goes in but its worth it. I was having very hard contractions and after the epidural, I didnt feel ANYTHING at all, until I started pushing. GOOD LUCK, hope everything goes well: )
