Zip files are files that are compressed. These files are sometime large or can be several files compressed to make one file this makes it easier to send files via the internet for download or email. You will know a file is zip because it has the .zip extension the icon looks can take two forms in appearance. it may look like a folder with a zipper on it if you are using Windows XP default zip program (already installed) or you can use Winzip which simply looks like a cabinet with a wrench Squeezing it.

If you are speaking in context to a file extension, then it is a type of file format. Basically many files can be compressed or squished into smaller pieces of information. This makes for a faster tranfer if dowloading or installing from a disk. If you want to use one of these files that is still compressed, you need to decompress the files to expand them back to their regular size. You will need to download a zip decompressor, for instance, winzip. Simply go to download.com and search for winzip. When you find and download this application, install winzip and double click the file that you need to decompress. Use the winzip program to decompress the files and pay close attention to the location that the files will be decompressed to.

compressed files, so they don't take up much room.
example a Zip Drive, they are not used as much as they use to with the use of Travel/Flash/Thumb drives, these are much smaller and easier to use.
