Yes, there are free ones, but they are not as good. I downloaded a few of them before (Adaware, spybot, etc.). Unfortunately, you get what you pay for. I now have Spy Sweeper by Webroot installed on my computer and have had it for 3 years now. I have not had any problems with spyware or adware since getting this program. It detects and removes waaaay more than the other free ones do. My advice, don't be cheap when it comes to protecting your computer, go ahead and spend the $19.99 for this program it's worth it.
--If you really *want* to protect your computer, you won't be searching for a way to do it for free. Believe me, you'll get what you pay for. As far as virus protection, I would not recommend McAfee at all. Norton is ok, but it also has a lot of issues. I now have Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security package. As soon as I installed it, it found things that Norton never did.

Yahoo's toolbar is really handy and comes with a spyware program.
Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner from http://www.kephyr.com/ is a free download that will tell you what you have, but you'll have to manually remove it (it provides step-by-step directions), which can be difficult and time-consuming.
You can also try XoftSpy. In the free version, it will tell you what you have and what file it is (a step up from Bazooka), so you can search your registry or your computer files for the spyware culprit.
Good luck!

Yes, the other answer are good.
I agree with the use of Spybot, Ad-Aware and a good Anti-Virus such as McAfee.
However, if these free and simple fixes don't help or only help very short-term,
Take your computer to a local computer repair shop with certified computer technicians.
At the very least they should be able to give you a 10 to 15 minute free check-Up to give you some idea of what's required to get your computer cleaned up.
Good Luck!

Spybot Search And Destroy
Lavasoft AdAware
I've had the best luck using these two.
Download and install them
Update them via the Internet
Reboot in safe mode by pressing the F8 key before the operating system starts
Scan with each program separately
Reboot normally
Scan again

I have found Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, and Microsoft's Anti-Spyware BETA work well in conjunction of Yahoo!'s Anti-Spy.

AdAware Se from lavasoft is the bomb! The free copy is so good, I am scared to know what the full version can do for a mere $20.
