Re-read the text book, and pay close attention to your notes. Teachers have a nasty habit of giving tests based on what you actually covered in class! Imagine that!
So, the better notes you took, the more likely you are to be looking at the ~actual~ test questions.

Read your notes, they pretty much get their exams by their notes (I guess it really depends on the teacher). Some others, rely on the textbooks. But definitely don´t study the night before, you´re already gonna be nervous about the exam and that won´t let you focus on learning any new material. Start studying right after the teacher announces the exam or when you know you´ll have an exam. Spending an hour or two after school going over notes really helps as well to keep them fresh in your mind. Good luck!!

Honestly, do not cram the night before or a couple of days before because that never works. Most of the answers are given in the lecture make sure you show up to class and keep up with the homework. High school teachers tend to give homework to instill in your mind the material they want you to remember, so keep up with that. I always showed up for class and did all the busy work and read. If you pay attention everyday to simple things like that, really you don't have to study! Because you know your stuff. So if you keep up with all your work exams should be a breeze and just review the material.
But if that doesn't work for you, review your notes every day after school for like 15-20 mins so you don't forget the material. Read ahead so you can participate in discussions. And always go ask for help! Ask the teacher to explain things in more detail. This is a win-win situation. One, you get more attention and extra help, Two he/she knows that you are trying. And they might just inch your grade up a little bit when they are finalizing your grade.

Whenever I had something to remember, I would just relate it to something I could remember. Like say you had to remember the colors of the rainbow- ROY G. BIV or the directions N(ever) E(at) S(oggy) W(affles). Or say you had to remember famous people like- Who commanded the Confederates in the Civil War? I have an uncle named Robert, so I always picture him commanding an army and I remember....
