Well, if used correctly, tampons are very, very safe. There's an illness known as TSS (toxic shock syndrome) but it's really rare these days and associated with a particular bacteria.
When you buy your tampons, there will be a little paper insert. Read that; it'll really help. I'd also suggest that you start with the new "teen" sizes. They're more comfortable.
As for changing them, most women change them according to need. On heavy flow days that may be every 2 hours; on lighter days it may be every 6.
Best wishes.

My mother only bought pads when I first started my period and I hated them because I was in sports. This is just a personal preference based on what you feel comfortable with.
Pads are fine if you don't mind having something directly between your legs. I personally hate them. I feel like I have a log between my legs and if it moves around a little you can have a bit of a mess. You may not be able to go swimming in the summer or in gym class.
I prefer tampons. Just be responsible and follow the directions on the box. Change every 8 hrs. Some women need to change more often. You can tell if you need to change more often if you have blood on the string and not just on the tampon itself. Tampons do not take away your virginity as someone implied. They would need to go very high up into the vagina.
I suggest that you might want to buy a small box or a travel size of a brand with an easy applicator. Try it for a cycle and see what you think. This is a very personal choice and you should do what you think is best. There is nothing wrong with whatever you choose. Just be proud to be a young woman who is being responsible for her health and her body.

I haven't used pads at all since I started using tampons. Pads prohibit you from doing so many things and you constantly have to worry about them shifting around and leaking. Plus, they are just gross and unsanitary. Who wants that mess trapped against their body?? There is a risk of tss (toxic shock syndrome) when you use tampons, but as long as you change regularly, no problem. Every hour or two depending on how heavy your cycle is. Every box of tampons comes with a detailed phamplet inside that will answer any questions you have. You should absolutely switch...you'll be free again!!
Please know that, contrary to what some of these people are saying, you DO NOT lose your virginity by using tampons!

I'm sorry but someone just said that if you use tampons, you lose your virginity. Last I checked a tampon wasn't a penis AND this person must be referring to the hymen (the slab of skin that breaks when you lose your virginity) which can be broken by doing a cartwheel! So, no, get your damn facts straight. You shouldn't be afraid to use tampons, if you put them in properly, you can't even feel them. There are instructions in every box and it tells you to change them often and do NOT exceed 4 hours. About the girl who died from using one... you can die in a damn car accident, does that mean you're going to ride a bike for the rest of your life? If you want to use a tampon its your decision. I've used tampons ever since I started my period and I've NEVER had a problem. Just do it right and you'll be fine.

If you read the instructions, you can get the correct timing to change your tampon, TSS is a very bad thing, so use the lowest absorbancy that you can. I know someone, who had a tampon in them for a couple of days and they got sick, but nothing happened. Just be careful and follow the instructions to a *T* and most people suggest for you not to wear them at night. Pads aren't that bad when your sleeping. Hope this helps!=)
P.s They can be very uncomfortable when you first put them in, if you arent use to them. I know that as long as you can urinate while they're in... then they're in the correct spot, so dont just keep trying like 300 times just leave one in for about 30 minutes and if your not comfortable by then, just dont use them. By the way, if you are a virgin, don't worry about it taking your virginity, you can break that little slab of skin, also called the hymen, by doing a cartwheel, split, or any kind of activity.
Good Luck! =)

When I first started my period, it took me several years to be able to even use tampons. I just could not get the hang of it, could not get them in, and did not like it. I did not like the pad either because it was like wearing a diaper. I remember the first time I got one in, and I was so proud of myself. It was so much more comfortable to wear a tampon and a panti-liner. I did have problems with the TSS, but only once. You will know when to change it. I can tell by cramps getting worse, if I have not made it to the restroom. Just don't leave it in for for than 4 hours at a time or so. Good luck. And no, your virginity is not gone, even if it could reach that high!!

you have to experiment a little to tell exactly when to change them. but never keep them in longer than 8 hours. then first couple times you wear a tampon wear a very small pad, so you can see when it leaks. [you dont want it to go through your pants!] but once you see it has leaked, it most likely means its full, so take it out, and remember how long its been. say... 5 hours. try that for one more day, if its about the same time frames then you can stop wearing the small pads and wear your tampon for one hour less than it took to leak. that should work... thats what i did!
i hope i could help =]

The reason why that girl died wasn't because she didn't change her tampon oftener but most likely because she had toxic shock syndrome. Some girls, not all, are unable to use tampons because they can make you physically sick. That happened to me when I was 13. My doctor told me of the syndrome I had and recommended me to use pads for the rest of my cycles until they are done.
I personally don't like tampons. They may be comfortable for some girls/women, but they can be awfully messy.
What kinds of pads do you use? I like the Always Maxi Pads with wings and I get the long overnight ones. They provide me with more comfort and coverage for any potential leakage or overflow when my period is bad. If your period is not heavy, then I recommend either a shorter kind of Always without or with wings or a ultra thin Always pad. I hope I was of some help to you and I wish you lots of luck!

You DO NOT lose your virginity by using tampons. That is ridiculous (in reference to a previous answer).
Tampons are much more comfortable, and if you change them every few hours you should be fine. Also use the least absorbancy, and if you have to, use a pantyliner with it. The risk of TSS increases with the heavier absorbancies.
You need to use what YOU feel comfortable using. If you try the tampon and you are not comfortable with it, switch back to pads.

Lots of people have used tampons forever. Just be clean and careful when using them. When you first start, only use it for a couple of hours maybe twice a day. They can be left in for up to 6 though. Get the slim ones to start. You will probably still have to wear a light pad anyway.
And remember to check when you go to bed that you haven't forgotten to take one out!
