You need to work out why you can't sleep.
It could be that you haven't actually tried to sleep! A lot of people (me included) get frustrated when they are in bed and don't feel tired. Then we'll get up and walk around, or watch TV or something, which doesn't actually help! If you do that then you just need to calm down and try lying with your eyes closed until you fall asleep.
The next most likely cause is stress, in which case you need to find a way to either get rid of the source of your stress, or to deal with the stress itself. Whatever it is, you need to remember to leave it outside your bedroom door. Think of it like this: when you are going to bed, you are supposed to be sleeping, not dealing with problems, so there is no point in worrying about them after x o'clock. If you do, you will just feel worse the next day. You need to tell yourself to forget about things for a few years.
If you have a more serious problem, it would be a good idea to talk to your doctor. They can probably give you something to help you sleep.
I hope this helps, sweet dreams!

Try a nice cup of chamomile tea with honey.Turn on a fan or some other form of white noise, then just lie quietly, and comfortably in bed with your eyes closed.Even if you don't go to sleep for a long time after wards, you will still get about 80% of the rest you would have gotten from sleep.

The worst thing to do is lie there trying to get to sleep - this is because you feel tense and annoyed at not being able to sleep, and this tension makes it even more difficult to sleep !! a vicious circle.
All you can do is get up and go and sit in a chair, doing something which is relaxing e.g. listen to music or read a story. Don't do anything which stimulates the mind though.
The best thing is to try and eliminate the tension which keeps you awake. I know this is easier said than done !!

I take melatonin but otherwise one trick I used before it was on the market ,was concentrating on one object - anything - : just picture it in your mind and try to block any thoughts.
Could be the most stupid thing like a box, lampshade..anything; not something which could start to make you wonder about it.
With time and practice : it works/worked for me. It is a bit hypnotic in a way and so boring that it actually puts you to sleep because you stop thinking.
Reading was never good for me - might be for others - because I always want to turn to the next chapter.....

I do one of the following:-
1) Read for a while.
2) Listen to music on my ipod.
3) Get up and watch an episode on one of my boxsets.
It doesn't always help me to drift off when I can't sleep but I'd prefer to be doing SOMETHING rather than tossing and turning the whole night and disturbing my boyfriend.

My wife has that problem. I've got a friend who swears by some herbal (melatonin, maybe), but my wife has tried it and it doesn't work for her.
Best thing is to remove yourself from bed, so you don't start associating bed with trying to fall asleep and not being able to and engage in something that distracts you but doesn't get you riled up. My father watches bad late night television (usually old B movies) when he can't sleep.

If you don't like the idea of taking chemical sleeping pills, you're not alone. I don't like the tought of it either so I found a substitute. Go to either a GNC or your local health supply store or alternative medicine store and buy some Valerian Root. I bought just the ground powder and empty capsules but they sell it already in caps. It's just ground up root that helps you gently go to sleep.

i imagine beautiful women. If that doesn't work I read.
You stressed about stuff? Cure the stress, or find a way to cope with it better, and the sleep will follow. Exercise can help too, especially swimming.
Booze doesn't really help me, I fall asleep faster but the sleep is shallow and broken.

I either read a book, drink a warm glass of milk, or watch television, until I get there...Or you could do all three...
Doing a vigorous work-out before going to bed, usually ensures that I'll get a good night sleep in, because your body is exhausted by then....Hope that Helps
