the controversy is:
it portrays jesus as a human, a good human... but ONLY a human and not the son of god.
it portrays him as a married person instead of single. with a wife and child.
it shows his teachings as diff than those used by the catholic church. (i.e. women are equal)
it shows that priests/bishops/clergy members are corrupt/power hungry (that always offends people... they tend to think "the leaders of MY religion are good, they would never do anything BAD". they forget those people are HUMAN and will act like one)
even though the book is a work of fiction (which the writer has himself stated) it does use some facts, enough of them where some people take it as the truth and again... this story throws the catholic church in a bad light.
(considering how catholics have covered themselves in glory with the inappropriate behavior of some of their priests, the church is trying to deflect any bad publicity)
and as always, the movie is about religion. this is always a hot topic with people because it is about BELIEF. (i mean look at how people acted when kevin smiths dogma movie came out. it had a rubber poop monster and the catholic league went into panic mode.)

First of all it is heresy. Secondly, it is blatently a fabricated story about Jesus Christ, the leader of the largest religion in the world. Thirdly, the author is making a ton of money by offending and attacking the largest religion in the world. That is grossly unethical and immoral. Fourth, he is getting a bunch of ignoramouses to believe his work of fiction is true. Finally, you and everyone should know that when you write a book and it becomes a movie about religion it will stir controversy. Look at Mel Gibson's "THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST" and all the controversy that stirred. Others religious movies offending religion has had similar responses mostly by being disrespectful of it.

The controversy lies in the fact that the author of the book portrays a relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene as man and wife.

Have you read the book?
Interesting. I actually finished it just last night. It wasn't what I thought it would be. And definately nothing to get your panties in a twist about.
I am going to rant a bit. It makes me quite angry so sorry.
It is a fictional book. Period. The people that are freaking out about it....most of them that I know have not even read the book. And like I said it isn't like what you would think because of the huge deal. I also believe that if people are going to take this fictional book and have it change their whole view of Jesus, then they have a big problem. Their faith was never strong to begin with.
Yes, it is about Jesus and Mary having a daughter. And it has been said so many times even BEFORE the book came out. No one urinated in their pants before that. Just you know-when a book of fiction comes out.
No one I know seems to have a real answer for hating it. Just that he had a daughter. I never took it as "oh Jesus wasn't the son of God blah blah blah". I just read it as "Jesus had a child".
Random things--I have used Yahoo Answers to ask questions myself. Apparently to be a rabbi (like Jesus) it is common to be married. And if you are a rabbi and not married then it is unnatural. Now I know this could be argued. But I think people argue it just for the sake of arguing. Why? Because they would deny things they have said before just to prove that He was not married. Hard to explain. I hope you understood that part.
I would also like to point out that being married and having a child is NOT a sin. Many people think it is I guess. Sex within marriage is NOT bad. There are some things I don't understand....if he walked as flesh and was tempted like man, then why is it so hard he would lived like a man just sinless. And getting married is something that men do.
Anyway, the reason (haha..long) people are freaking out is because it takes Jesus who is known as divine, and it makes him undivine. And if you look up the word divine you get:
"1 a : of, relating to, or proceeding directly from God or a god b : being a deity c : directed to a deity "
And that just doesn't scream "to not be deflowered" to me.

The controvery is that there are people who have issues with the possibility that the son of God could have fallen in love and had a family. Which is what is indicated by the movie. To me that just makes him more human and easier to follow. If it were really true.
No one knows for sure.

there is that whole, "Jesus didn't die on the cross and had kids" thing that makes it so controversial. Really, this negates a major point of christianity ie. jesus resurrected after 3 days, thus proving his divine origin.
