Yahoo! is from the U.S., so it is widely used by Americans in the United States. So this is my problem ........... Football is not soccer. Football is the sport where 4 quaters is used, NOT 2 halfs, where the game clock ACTUALLY matters. My point is that these idiots who think football is soccer just don't get it. When someone says football, they don't mean a sport where a round ball is used, they mean a sport that has Multi-Billionare owners and Multi-Millionare players. This "soccer" sport is not popular in US for a reason, football (as in the NFL, which is worth 965 billion dollars in the US, by the way) is,so if you agree with me, thank you.

Music??

Anyhow - the Internet has made the world a much smaller place. We've become more of a global community. And bottom line, "Football" (or soccer as we Americans call it) is the #1 Sport in the World, if I'm not mistaken and also a much OLDER game. It has a large following in the US, but you're right in that American Football is much more popular and profitable in the US.

So again - try not to be the "ugly American" and assume the whole world revolves around our hobbies. It's time for the "World Cup" - which means sports enthusiast from around the WORLD are watching their teams play what everybody else in the world calls "football".

Learn to accept other cultures, and learn to post on the correct board. ;-)

Darling, get over it! It is obvious once someone mentions a team or a play which football they are talking about. I LOVE Football (real, AMERICAN football!!!) but dont find this to be a problem. And, hate to say it, soccer IS gaining momentum in the US as an actual sport!

Oh, and, which one makes more sense to be called football? I mean, how often do you use a foot in American Football?

the reason for this is that around the world soccer is more popular than American football and because in Europe, in all the languages is called football and we mean soccer (i think even the English people say football to it). here when we talk about the American one we say American football in order to separate the two sports.

No. If "these' idiots think football is soccer then why do these "idiots" use two different words? I think it's maybe because they know it's two different sports. And if you ask for an opinion, I think you should thank everyone that gives you one not just the ones that agree with you.

Money follows value. If people in the US valued soccor more (and they are, more and more), then the money would follow that.

In defense of the money aspect of sports, I strongly recommend Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It's a rational defense of capitalism that nobody seems to have the guts to do anymore.

Linus Torvalds used a paradigm for his semi-autobiographical book that was something like: we evolve from survival to technological attainment, to entertainment. It's all about fun, in the long-run. Brutal sports are fun, whether you agree with them or not. That's probably why the NFL's version of football works so well with a people obsessed with leisure. As we see better and better athletes in soccor, we also can see the brutality and fun there, so there you go.

Ummm ... no. That's American Football. Football, the national game over here in the UK, is only known as soccer in the US because it confused people to refer to it as just 'football', so the name soccer was invented for the US audience.

People in other countries, where soccer is called football, could tell you it is a multi-billion dollar industry there, and it's on every ESPN, the stats are on the news, and get ready, it's gonna get big here too.
Sorry!

Ok I kind of get your problem, don't understand why you're so worked up about it though. There are soldiers dying in Iraq everyday. Bigger things in the world to worry about than soccer versus football.

well technically in the rest of the world, soccer is football but I prefer the soccer name because it doesn't cause confusion. Well, also, here in Japan we say soccer.
