My guess is that you will have a lot of democrat responses saying something along the lines of "republicans are idiots" or whatever emotional illogical name-calling response they can muster up.
I will try to answer as easily as I can.
Democrats (aka Left Wing - as they tend to sit on the left side of the senate/house floor) are usually known as "Liberals." While I very much dislike Liberals, they generally represent personal liberties and civil rights (i.e. gay rights, pro-choice). This is usually a good thing unless it is taken to the extreme which both sides usually do. Although they cannot put a name to it, they also usually have what I call a "Robin Hood" theory: steal (higher tax) from the rich to give to the poor (welfare). Depending on your stance on capitalism and companies, you may agree or disagree with this.
Republicans (aka Right Wing - as they tend to sit on the right side of the floor) are usually known as "Conservatives." They are usually stereotyped as the uptight religious group. Most support capitalism and the growth of businesses. Again, this is generally good unless taken to an extreme. They are generally more traditional and stand against radical social change as they can see the effects that it can potentially have on our society as a whole (i.e. pro-life, heterosexual marriage).
Really when it comes down to it, both sides like to play issues such as abortion and gay marriage against each other because that's what the sheep voters usually only care to see on the surface. Both sides are equally as corrupt and plagued by scandal after scandal although they will both blame each other for being worse. And none of them really truly represent you.

LOL. we have some very bias answers.... here's my shot
Republicans:
Free-market economy
Usually upper-middle class
Make better life by usually limiting individual's rights
Democrats:
Slightly more socialist (ie charity)
This attracts many minorities
Make better life by giving people more rights
Republicans are accused of taking away people's freedoms, while Democrats are accused of giving people too much freedom (this CAN be a bad thing, too; when your freedom hurts other people).
For example;
Republicans are usually Pro-Life (this limits people's freedom to an abortion).
Democrats are Pro-Choice (this gives people freedom, but are we killing unborn babies?).
BOTH Democrats and Republicans have a good point when it comes to abortion.
Republicans and Democrats both have their problems. To be too extreme on any issue is a bad idea. Hear both sides of the story, and decide what's best for your community when you vote.
Hope that helps!

My mom always said a republican is like a newborn dog who is born with his eyes shut and never opens them after birth and that being a Democrat and being around Republicans she feels like the only sound grain of corn in a barrel of rat manure.

Very hard question to ask.
The best thing is to not be labeled and think through on every topic and every candidate. Middle of the road, moderate, a third way. That is the right way to be.
As for the difference, in a nut shell.
Democrats generally believe that it is the government that should help provide for people. It is based on a compassion to help those who need help.
Republicans generally believe to let the free market economy help people and government should provide security but generally stay out of peoples lives. It is based on growth which will be used to help people.

Democrats donate their old clothing to charities.
Republicans wear theirs.
(Democrats also change their spots. Can you imagine a Democrat of 2006 saying, "Ask not what your country can do for you!" Nope, they don't make Democrats like that anymore.)

Are you a modern person or do you have old world beliefs. if you think guns should be banned, abortions should be used as birth control, and we should be friendly to the world, youre most likely a dem. If you think owning guns is a right, homosexuals shouldnt marry, and our interests around the world protected (and the rest of the world can kiss our a$$), then your probably a rep.

Democrates want big government, which means government programs, which means more taxes. Republicans want less government and people taking care of them selves and less taxes. Just remember you are the government, and both parties are suppose to do the will of the majority, not the monitory.

Democrats give more people to the lazy welfare people because they think we should be closer to communism where everyone is equal so the lazy people make the working people work for them. Republicans give less money to the lazy people because they want the hard working people to have their own money not the lazy people having their money.
GO REPUBLICANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
