My gen chem professor said it is hard rote memory, so I just repeated the list to myself as often as possible until I could do it without looking. Then when I got to the test the first thing I did was write it down.
On the other hand, my inorganic professor said that he had to memorize the transition metals, and a friend of his made up a really dirty song using the letters. Then sang it to himself in during the test. I don' t know if that would work for you, but it's an amusing story so I thought I'd share. Then I found 5 dollars. Sigh...
